OPENING MASS, AUG. 4
Archbishop James Golka of Denver
My father was a young married man, incredibly talented, a natural leader, but he did not know it. He was a shy man. You women do faith naturally. We men need help. The Knights of Columbus exists to help our men grow in their faith, and they sure did for my dad. …
In 1990, I was off to seminary to study for the Diocese of Grand Island. I never owned a car, so I bought a 1980 Toyota Tercel with 500,000 miles on it, stick shift, no air conditioning. It worked well for a couple of months, but eventually my brakes went out; at the auto shop, they said, “We can repair that, but it’s going to cost $252.” In those days, that was a lot of money. I had no money. …
I remember parking the car. I walked right to the mail room of the seminary, and in there was an envelope from the Knights of Columbus council in Ogallala, Nebraska. I had never been to that council, had never visited them, never received anything from them before. I opened the envelope, and inside they said, “Here is a check for $253.”
If you listen to God’s will for you and say yes, God will absolutely take care of you. And he’ll even give you an extra dollar for a cup of coffee. And God wants the Knights of Columbus to help him care for his children. God wants the Knights of Columbus to help carry out God’s purposes. ...
The Knights of Columbus empowers Catholic men to live their faith and serve their family, parish, community and country. I think that’s absolutely true. But I think if I step back and look at the Knights of Columbus, along with many other apostolates doing such good work, I think we’re all part of a bigger mission.
I’m convicted. The Knights of Columbus exists because God wants his world back. …
So let us open our ears and our hearts and our eyes, that we can know better his plan for you, for our life, for the Knights of Columbus, for the entire world — so that God can get his world back through our humble service. Amen.
