(Photo by Vatican Media) </div> </figcaption> </figure> </section> <section class="col-article__content-rich-text"> <div class="score-rich-text-block default default"> <div class="content-area "> <div class="rich-text "> <br /> <div> <p>On Aug. 25, Pope Leo XIV appointed Supreme Knight Patrick Kelly as a member of the Vatican’s Dicastery for Laity, Family and Life.</p> <p>Established in 2016 by Pope Francis, the dicastery promotes the vocation and mission of the lay faithful, the pastoral care of young people, families and the elderly, and the protection of human life. Its responsibilities include organizing World Youth Days, the World Meeting of Families and the World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly, as well as supporting lay movements and associations throughout the Church. Since its founding, the dicastery has been headed by Cardinal Kevin Farrell, who served as bishop of Dallas from 2007 to 2016 and is a former state chaplain of Texas.</p> <p>“I am deeply grateful to His Holiness Pope Leo XIV for appointing me as a member of the Dicastery for Laity, Family and Life,” Supreme Knight Kelly said in a statement following the Vatican announcement. “Since our founding by Blessed Michael McGivney in 1882, the Knights of Columbus has been dedicated to strengthening Catholic laymen in the faith, to supporting Catholic family life and to building up a culture of life. I look forward to supporting this vital work of the Catholic Church, and I pledge, as always, the loyalty and prayers of our 2.2 million brother Knights around the world for our Holy Father.”</p> <p>The dicastery’s <a href="https://www.laityfamilylife.va/content/laityfamilylife/en/il-dicastero/membri-e-consultori.html">website</a> lists 27 members, including cardinals, bishops, priests, married couples, academics and the leaders of lay movements from around the world.</p> <p>Earlier this month, Pope Leo addressed a video message to the delegates and their families attending the 144th Supreme Convention in Denver.</p> <p>“Building upon the efforts begun by your noble founder, Blessed Michael McGivney,” the Holy Father said, “the Knights of Columbus have worked together for well over a century to show Christ’s love to the unborn, expectant mothers, persecuted Christians, victims of war and human trafficking, the poor and vulnerable, and those who live on the margins of society.
