Supreme Knight Patrick Kelly and Past Supreme Knight Carl Anderson presented Former Supreme Warden Graydon Nicholas with the Caritas Award during the Aug. 5 business session. Established by the Board of Directors in 2013, the award is conferred only when merited in recognition of extraordinary works of charity and service.
Before joining the Supreme Council in 2015, Nicholas served as lieutenant governor of New Brunswick from 2009 to 2014, becoming the first Indigenous person to hold that office. He later played an integral role in developing the Order’s Native Solidarity Initiative and served for five years as consultant to the supreme knight for Canadian and Indigenous affairs. He has also promoted devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe and represented the Knights of Columbus on several committees of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops.
Introducing Nicholas, Supreme Knight Kelly noted his decades of service to Indigenous peoples: “Throughout his career as a lawyer, judge, government official and college professor, he has worked for the Indigenous peoples of Canada, promoting their causes and protecting their rights.”
During the Canadian Association meeting on Aug. 3, Deputy Supreme Knight Arthur Peters, a past state deputy of Ontario, thanked Nicholas for his service to the Church and the Knights of Columbus, saying, “We are so fortunate to have this man. The things he can tell us about our history, about our culture, about our country — there is so much. He is one of the most decent human beings you will ever meet.”
